Paper Chase

2022 Video

The Office of Undergraduate Research is sponsoring the 2023 Paper Chase Program in an effort to increase research dissemination training practices for students. We are now accepting undergraduate and graduate student applications through March 9th for the Paper Chase professional development program. This hybrid boot camp will prepare students to understand and succeed with the research communication piece, post-data collection.
What is “Paper Chase”? Paper Chase is a collaborative method of intense and rapid development of a manuscript in which the authorship team comes together for approximately 16-24 hours to write up the analyzed results of a study. Think of this as a marathon of writing, where all team members write simultaneously and pass the sections of the paper around after a designated time block. The end product of the Paper Chase event is a manuscript ready for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Paper Chases are a great way to get research disseminated, increase team mentorship in writing, and ensure that the authorship team is involved across all sections of the manuscript. Participants in our program are offered co-authorship credit on the final product.

What is the training like? This training program entails a commitment to complete online, asynchronous Canvas modules (total of approximately 3-5 hours) that will train students in the logistics of the Paper Chase, in addition to developing a manuscript with a team of UNC Charlotte students and a faculty member on campus May 17-19th from 9-5. Students will apply to a Paper Chase team, based on interest and experience – this will be a competitive process – and we will do our best to match students with a faculty member and writing team with overlapping interests. The faculty and facilitators will provide mentorship throughout the process with 3 team meetings leading up to the event, and support throughout the 3-day Paper Chase exercise.

How do students prepare? All members of the Paper Chase team are required to complete online Canvas training modules on the process by May 15, 2023. There will be several team meetings scheduled to help students understand the research project. Finally, students will meet with their team for a total of 18-24 hours over three working days May 17, 18, & 19th on campus. As a participant, students will be expected to be present in the process fully. We will ask students to complete surveys before and after to help us improve the program for sustainability. Students will be eligible to receive up to $500 in a stipend for their completion of this program (with $250 provided for completion of the modules and $250 for completion of the Paper Chase process and surveys by the posted deadlines).
